The Southern Miss Golden Eagles came into Saturday’s game at Troy wanting to improve on their performance coming off a loss last week at Mississippi State.

Boy, did they ever!

Southern Miss scored touchdowns in a bunch of different ways and beat the Trojans 47-42.

Both teams combined for over 1100 yards of total offense.

Golden Eagle quarterback Jack Abraham passed for 463 yards and 2 TD’s and added a rushing touchdown. RB Steven Anderson rushed for a touchdown.

The Southern Miss offensive line provided solid protection for Abraham all night, allowing only 1 sack.

WR Quez Watkins, in his first game back after a 2-game suspension, caught 7 passes for 209 yards and 2 touchdowns. WR Jordan Mitchell had 3 receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown.

WR Jaylond Adams had 3 kickoff returns for 136 yards, including a return for 100 yards for a touchdown, his second kickoff return for a touchdown this year. He also made 11 catches for 180 yards. The kicking game was perfect, going 5 for 5 on extra points and 2 for 2 on field goals. Special teams continues to be a bright spot.

The Golden Eagles had zero turnovers in the game. But they did have 10 penalties for 97 yards.

The Southern Miss defense recorded 4 sacks but did allow 528 yards passing by Troy QB Kaleb Barker. Troy had 4 different receivers go over 100 yards each in the game.

This was a great win for the Golden Eagles. They played a solid game. The offense, defense line, and special teams all contributed to this win.

Golden Eagles now shift their focus and prepare for next week’s game with Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

  1. The Swamp Angel

Southern Miss played a great offensive game. The QB play was on a Joe Burrow scale against Troy State. With hope, luck, and some deep and fervent prayer, maybe the Golden Eagles can leave a foul (or is it “fowl”) taste in Bama’s mouth this weekend and leave Saban scowling like The Bear all those many years ago. USM needs to add to that mural on the wall in the Registrar’s office!

    Go Eagles!

Thanks!! Believe it or not, Alabama’s defense is ranked #45 in rush defense, #50 in pass defense, and #40 in total defense. But they are holding opponents to 12 points per game, good for #14 in the country.
