No transfer quarterbacks for the Sooners in 2020. The Oklahoma Sooners have been the beneficiary of some top-notch quarterback play over the last five years.
Success Passing the Torch
Baker Mayfield transferred into the program from Texas Tech in 2015 and led the Sooners to two college football playoff appearances, and won the Heisman Trophy in 2017. Mayfield’s career numbers at Oklahoma are prolific. In three years, he threw for 12,292 yards, 119 touchdowns, and only 21 interceptions. His record as a starter was 34-6. But both CFP appearances were losses, to Clemson in 2015 and to Georgia in double-overtime in 2017.
Kyler Murray transferred to the Sooners in 2017 from Texas A&M. Murray promptly took over the quarterback duties in 2018 after waiting in the wings behind Mayfield. He too would lead the Sooners back to the college football playoff with a 12-2 record, losing to Alabama 45-30. As the starter in 2018, Murray threw for 4361 yards, 42 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also hoisted the Heisman Trophy.
Jalen Hurts left Alabama in, after being the backup to Tua Tagolaivoa in 2018, and came to Oklahoma as a graduate transfer. As the Sooners’ third consecutive transfer quarterback, Hurts led Oklahoma to a 12-2 record and their fourth college football playoff appearance in five years. But they lost 63-28 to LSU in the national semifinal. Hurts passed for 3851 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions in 2019. As a starter, his career numbers are solid: 9477 yards, 80 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions.
Talented, but Inexperienced
In 2020, two inexperienced quarterbacks will compete for the job of running Lincoln Riley’s Air Raid offense. Redshirt sophomore Tanner Mordecai and true sophomore Spencer Rattler. Both combined for just 288 yards passing, three touchdowns, and no interceptions last season.
Mordecai was a 4-star recruit out Waco, TX, ranked #249 overall prospect and the #11 quarterback prospect by 247sports.com.
Rattler was a 5-star recruit from Phoenix, AZ, ranked as the #11 overall prospect and the #1 pro-style quarterback prospect by 247sports.com.
No transfer quarterbacks for the Sooners in 2020
To say there potentially could be some growing pains this season would be an understatement. After five years of outstanding play at quarterback, 2020 could be a down year for the Sooners. Riley chose not to pursue a quarterback in the transfer portal, even though there were some good candidates worth taking a look at, such as KJ Costello, D’Eriq King, and Jamie Newman.
No transfer QBs for the Sooners in 2020. This will be Mordecai’s third year in the program, but Rattler is the more athletic of the two. Spring practice this year in Norman should be interesting.
