Memphis WR Tahj Washington Named to Freshman All-American Team -

After a chaotic 2020 season, the Memphis football program had a player named Freshman All-American. Memphis WR Tahj Washington was named to the Football Writers’ of America Association (FWAA) Freshman All-American Team.

This is significant because it was the fourth time in five years that Memphis had a player named Freshman All-American.

Washington, a native of Marshall, TX, led all freshman receivers nationally with 743 receiving yards, catching 43 passes and scoring six touchdowns. He averaged 17 yards per catch.

And, the 743 receiving yards were the second-most in school history.

With regards to all-purpose yardage, Washington was just four yards shy of 1000 yards (996). He had three 100+ yard receiving games:

2 catches, 104 yards, 1 TD vs #7 Cincinnati (92 yard TD catch)
7 catches, 131 yards vs UCF in a 50-49 Memphis win
8 catches, 105 yards vs FAU
92-yard catch vs Cincinnati was the longest play from scrimmage for Memphis in 2020.

Washington averaged double-digit yards per catch in nine of the eleven games this past season.

2021 Season

In 2021, Washington will be part of an experienced pass-catching duo with the announcement of Calvin Austin III returning for his senior season. Austin had 63 catches for 1053 yards and 11 TDs.

And, seven of the first nine games will be played at the Liberty Bowl.
