Southern Miss kick returner Jaylond Adams took the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown and set the tone early as the Golden Eagles beat Alcorn State 38-10 at The Rock in Hattiesburg.
Adams would do it again in the 4th quarter, taking a punt return for another score.
QB Jack Abraham threw for 293 yards and a TD, and also scored a rushing touchdown.
The Golden Eagles were without their best receiver, Quez Watkins, who is sitting out the first 2 games for unspecified reasons. Watkins returns to the lineup in week 3 at Troy. Sr. WR Jordan Mitchell hauled in 7 catches for 133 yards.
Southern Miss had trouble running ball all night, rushing for only 96 yards for the game. And, they lost starting RB Trevinskey Mosley to a lower leg injury and he had to be helped off the field. The severity of that injury is unknown at this time.
The defense played lights out, holding Alcorn to 56 total yards in the 1st half, 219 yards for the game, and forcing 2 turnovers.
The Golden Eagles travel next week to Starkville to take on Mississippi State.
